El Canto del Colibrí
Much like the seldom-heard song of the hummingbird, the voices of Latino fathers are rarely heard addressing LGBTQ issues. But in Marco Castro-Bojorquez’s El Canto del Colibrí, made in participation with Somos Familia and BAYCAT, these voices are amplified in a groundbreaking documentary—the first of its kind.
Through raw, heartfelt testimonies, El Canto del Colibrí delves deeply into issues of immigration, prejudice, and isolation, while thoughtfully asking questions of these men’s communities, culture, and even their religious beliefs. The result is a powerful lesson on solidarity and humility in a film that both heals and inspires, ultimately building bridges of hope and solidarity among Latino fathers, their families, and community activists. In Spanish, with English subtitles

Reviews and Awards
“…both generations come together in this powerful documentary about healing, understanding, and love.Highly recommended. 3 1/2 stars” —Video Librarian
“El Canto del Colibrí is a moving film that intimately portrays immigrant Latinx families as they come to understand, accept, support, and celebrate their children who identify as queer and transgender. The documentary beautifully weaves in the stories of parents and children to highlight their full humanity and contextualize a family process that is often challenging. I highly recommend it to all high school and college educators for classes on immigration, families, and Latina/os in the US. My students were enlightened and empowered as the film helped transform their notions of Latinx families and acceptance.” —Leisy Abrego, UCLA Professor of Chicana/o Studies
“This film brings voice and hope to queer latinos still having conversations with our parents and moving toward full family acceptance.” —Dawn-Marie Luna, Fresno community leader
