Stage Mother
If you cross Sister Act with Sordid Lives and add a dash of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, you’d wind up with Stage Mother, the latest winning feature from director Thom Fitzgerald (Cloudburst, Frameline36). Two-time Oscar nominee Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook) is sensational as Maybelline, a Texas church choir director whose life is turned upside down when she unexpectedly inherits a San Francisco drag club from her estranged son.
After disowning Rickey a decade prior for being gay, the spunky but conservative Maybelline finds herself headfirst in a glittery world of eccentric SF queers and drag queens—and at odds with Rickey’s longterm partner (Entourage’s Adrian Grenier). Against her husband’s and friends’ wishes, Maybelline resolves to put her years of choir directing to good use by taking over her son’s struggling cabaret. “Different songs, same divas... some of the same wigs too.” Lucy Liu, Tangerine’s Mya Taylor, and drag superstar Jackie Beat also star in this heartfelt and quick-witted valentine to San Francisco.
