City of Lost Souls

Directed by Rosa von Praunheim1983West Germany91 mins

Hilarious, raunchy, and so very ahead of its time, City of Lost Souls addresses an array of issues that continue to be relevant over 35 years later, from trans rights to immigration concerns. Co-presented with Dirty Looks and Peaches Christ, Frameline is delighted to screen this outrageous cult classic from iconoclast queer auteur Rosa von Praunheim (It Is Not the Homosexual Who Is Perverse, But the Society in Which He Lives). Transgender punk icon Jayne County stars alongside trans cabaret maven Angie Stardust in this rock musical extravaganza about a collective of pansexual American expats—including an erotic trapeze artist duo, an occultist spiritual therapist, and a nymphomaniac giving English lessons—living in Stardust's boarding house/restaurant called Burger Queen in Berlin.

With a healthy mixture of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, John Waters, and Rainer Werner Fassbinder, this fun, sexy, and delightfully deranged comic masterpiece takes us back to the glory days of queer life in Berlin circa 1983.
