Queer Genius

Directed by Chet Catherine Pancake2019USA115 mins

“My work is about so many things, besides, you know, pussy,” proclaims iconic poet, Eileen Myles in this deep, affectionate look at the life and work of five remarkable queer artists. The legendary Barbara Hammer (Frameline Award recipient and one of the festival’s most beloved filmmakers who passed away in March before the film was completed) reflects on her life’s work and dedication to portraying lesbian sexuality as we go behind the scenes for her multimedia Whitney Museum cancer performance Evidentiary Bodies.

We spend time with collaborators Rasheedah Phillips and Camae Ayewa (aka Moor Mother) whose Black Quantum Futurism collective explores Black African traditions of consciousness, time, and space via revelatory multimedia performances and creative activism workshops in communities of color in Philadelphia. Innovative performance artist Jibz Cameron (aka Dynasty Handbag) achieves a wildly queer aesthetic as she reflects on everything from the hero narrative to not fitting in. Lastly, we go deep with poet Myles, discussing their rise to mainstream fame, decades-long career, and pioneering campaign for President in 1992.

Please join Jenni Olson, San Francisco filmmaker and former Frameline programmer, for a pre-screening tribute to Barbara Hammer (1939-2019).
