Completely witty and charming, this second feature from Rose Troche cemented her stature as an intriguing new filmmaker to be reckoned with. Bedrooms and Hallways follows a circle of queer and queer-friendly friends as they seek for and find love, sometimes in the least likely places.
Leo (Kevin McKidd) and Darren (Tom Hollander) are gay flatmates, sharing life, drama, and everything but romance as they support each other through singledom. At the suggestion of a straight friend, Leo joins a men's counseling group, and all manner of chaos is unleashed when they find out he's queer. Questions of attraction confuse and confound, as Leo develops an unrelenting crush on the seemingly straight and recently divorced Brendan (James Purefoy). Meanwhile, trying to curb his penchant for casual sex, Darren begins a relationship with real estate agent Jeremy (Hugo Weaving), who just happens to be a sex addict.
Things turn even more confusing when Leo and Brendan begin an affair, only to discover that Brendan's ex-wife is also Leo's childhood sweetheart. Full of just the sort of strange coincidences and connections that often make life seem stranger than fiction, Bedrooms and Hallways is a hilarious and enchanting reminder that every person, regardless of sexual identity, is simply looking for love.
