We are proud to present part one of Frameline Award winner Barbara Hammer's lesbian history trilogy, Nitrate Kisses.
A revolutionary exploration of society's eroded and lost emulsions and images of lesbian and gay culture, this landmark film paints striking portraits of the sexual activities of four gay and lesbian couples using footage that unearths the forbidden and invisible history of a marginalized people.
A defiant triumph over invisibility, Nitrate Kisses is more than a film — it is a call to action, encouraging everyone in our community to save scraps, letters, books, records, and snapshots in order to preserve our ordinary lives as part of our visible and necessary history.
Interweaving rare historical gems such as archival footage from the first gay film in the U.S., Lot in Sodom (1933), and footage from German documentary and narrative films of the '30s with current images of desire, this sexy and haunting documentary takes a strong step toward creating and reclaiming queer history.
This film is a recipient of a Frameline Completion Fund grant.
