French director François Ozon, whose latest features Criminal Lovers and Water Drops on Burning Rocks premiere in this year's Festival, was previously known for his daring and inventive shorts. In Ozon's 1995 La petite mort, a young gay photographer is tormented by a photo of himself as a baby. After the death of his father, a box of family photos reveals a startling truth. A Summer Dress is the story of Frederick and his holiday encounter with a stranger on the beach, which further complicates his already ambivalent teenage sexuality. Also set in a holiday locale, See the Sea tells the dark and provocative story of Sasha, a young mother awaiting the return of her husband. Her solitude is broken by the appearance of Tatiana, a brooding backpacker who asks to camp out side her cottage. Sasha grows increasingly fascinated with her mysterious visitor whose demeanor gradually becomes more ominous as she insinuates herself into Sasha's home.
Photographer Paul receives news that his father is at death's door, so he reluctantly pays a final visit to see him at the hospital. Paul hasn't seen his father in six years, and all his life believed that his father found him to be ugly and not even his own child. With mixed emotions, Paul struggles to reconcile paternal love with his own guilt.
While waiting at a coastal idyll for her husband to return from a business trip, young Sasha and her baby Sioffra are visited by Tatiana, a strange woman traveler who pitches a tent in Sasha's garden. The women strike up a friendship that on the surface seems awkward, and just underneath — entirely unnatural.
It's summer. Sébastien loves to sing his favourite songs out loud. Lucia loves picking up boys at the beach. And all Luc wants is to get a nice tan...
