Lesbian Pulp-O-Rama Goes to Sweden!

Directed by Heather de Michele2006USA68 mins

The girl-on-girl fantasies that peppered the pages of male-oriented pulp novels in the ’50s and ’60s (and were secretly devoured by lesbians of that generation) provide juicy fodder for the irrepressible off-off-Broadway troupe Lesbian Pulp-O-Rama. The talented sextet takes the ripest situations imaginable — cheerleader practices, casting couches, ski resorts and sororities — and smartly filters them through a unique blend of Restoration theater, melodrama and slapstick.

A cult phenomenon in the Land of Blondes, where they’re embraced as out inspirations, the ladies return for their second tour with the massively entertaining holiday show A Very Pulpy Christmas! This rambunctious documentary captures the group giving insightful interviews to the media, clowning backstage and performing great chunks of the show. Of the many highlights, an affectionate parody of Marlene Dietrich singing “Falling in Love Again” stands out. But you’re bound to have your own favorite, for Lesbian Pulp-O-Rama is unabashedly more about pleasure than politics.

Made for French television, A Lez in Wonderland is an exuberantly tongue-in-cheek (and tongue-on-tongue) travelogue of the rip-roaring Dinah Shore Weekend held each year in Palm Springs. Between the bikini contest and the room party, rambunctious guide Anna Margarita Albelo manages to squeeze in an interview with the always entertaining Guinevere Turner. — MICHAEL FOX
