What would you do if you lived every day face to face with death? Gregg Gour, a 48-year-old man with HIV, has done just that for 24 long years. But now he is ready to stop fighting and has come to a wrenching decision: He will stop taking his medication. Rather than suffer a long and painful death, he plans to end his own life once his health deteriorates to the point where he loses his independence. But first he must say goodbye.
Given six months to live, Gregg packs up an RV and crisscrosses the country to bid farewell to his friends and family. As the camera follows him from Arizona to New Mexico, from Wisconsin to Pennsylvania, we bear witness to his heartbreaking and often transformational story. During this emotional journey we see how his very personal decision has deeply affected those who love him — some of whom question his decision — as they grapple with fundamental questions about religion, the afterlife and a person’s right to control their destiny. But as his health deteriorates, Gregg’s strength, depth and conviction only grow stronger.
A Finished Life is a powerful and unflinching documentary that deeply honors the conscious experience of dying, a person’s right to choose, the fragility of human relationships and the difficulty of letting go.
