Open

Directed by Jake Yuzna2009USA88 mins

A flame-haired and gold-toothed couple in the process of making themselves over in each other’s image. An androgynous beauty struggling with her gender while searching for a partner. A gay man who discovers his newfound boyfriend is pregnant. These characters circulate through Jake Yuzna’s striking, elliptical narrative feature, Open, as they attempt to carve out new forms of love and identity in a world from which they have been largely cut-off.

Gen (Tempest Crane), born male, and his female-born partner, Jay (Jendeen Forberg), are undergoing a series of plastic surgeries in order to transform themselves into the same pandrogynous being. When Jay heads out of town, Gen and shy, recently-single, inter-sex friend Cynthia (Gaea Gaddy) embark on a roadtrip that goes awry when Cynthia confesses feelings for her traveling companion. Things also become complicated for Nick (Daniel Luedtke) when Syd (Morty Diamond), the FTM cutie he has recently become involved with, reveals that he’s expecting.

The bleak suburban sprawl and concrete jumble of the Twin Cities area, artistically shot by cinematographers Matt Carlson and Adam Olson, alternately offer Yuzna’s crew of gender outlaws imprisonment and escape as they discuss their anxieties and dreams about who, and what, they hope to become.

The film’s dream-like quality is further underscored by Adult’s lush, melancholic original soundtrack, reminiscent of the beatless, warm ambient electronica of Brian Eno or Stars of the Lid.

This film is a recipient of a Frameline Completion Fund grant.
