Looking for Simon

Directed by Jan Krüger2011Germany/France89 mins

Everyone thinks they know Simon. His mother, Valerie, has a definitive image of her son: he’s a responsible, prominent doctor in France. Though they’ve had a few rough patches due to his sexuality, when Simon doesn’t check in with her after a week, her motherly instincts kick in and she knows something is wrong. After the police prove to be no help, Valerie calls someone she never would have contacted otherwise — Simon’s ex boyfriend, Jens.

Jens also thinks he knows Simon. Easy-going and smugly amused by Valerie’s concerns, he flies to France to help her find him, though he is pretty sure that Simon is just off having a good time and simply doesn’t want to speak with his overbearing mother. Once in Simon’s apartment, as they watch home videos, talk to Simon’s colleagues, and slowly put together the pieces of Simon’s recent activities — including a possible addiction to tranquilizers, extravagant purchases and surprising sexual encounters—both Valerie and Jens start to realize that there are plenty of secrets that Simon hasn’t shared with mother or lover.

The unlikely pair begin to cling to each other as they question their own relationships with Simon, which leads them to eventually questioning themselves. Full of longing, regret, and intrigue, Looking for Simon is a raw, psychological thriller.
