Ever wonder what the apocalypse, talking penises and a gay cartoon musical have in common? We’re not sure either, but they’re all subjects in amazing queer films brought to life in our annual animated program. On a trip to “Crippled Children's Camp,” Terry Galloway falls for the deep-end swimming instructor, nearly drowning as she learns to perform her newly discovered queer, disabled identity in The Performance of Drowning. It’s girl meets girl in Half, but is it ever that simple? Two queer characters question the meaning of the end of the world in Land: An Animation. Nowhere to Run: Paul’s Story from ORAM (Organization for Refuge, Asylum and Migration) chronicles the challenges Paul faces as he tries to escape to the United Kingdom from Jamaica after being ostracized by his neighbors for his sexual orientation. Animated nocturnal emissions never looked so sexy as in Strong and Dreaming, an inspiring meditation on self-love and strength. Based on the popular, long running, gay comic strip, Troy: Naked Boy Behind Bars, Sing! is a silly, sweet, slightly sarcastic, animated satire of gaysploitation entertainment. In the heart of the Australian outback lives Miss Beaver Eater who reveals her filthiest fantasies in The Confession of Father John Thomas. Finally, in The Paper Mirror cartoonist Alison Bechdel and painter Riva Lehrer move away from representation of their immediate cultures and collaborate on a new artistic project.
Alison Bechdel, best for her decades-long comic strip “Dykes to Watch Out For,” is going through a transitional artistic phase. World-renowned painter Riva Lehrer’s art is also shifting as she moves from art focusing on disabilities to other subjects. Charissa King O'Brien’s intimate short documentary captures this pivotal collaboration between two influential artists.
