Changing the Game zeroes in on the explosive fight for trans rights occurring on high school athletic fields across the US. From racetracks in Connecticut to gymnasiums in Texas, this searing documentary paints a devastating portrait of bigotry against trans athletes but also finds hope in the unlikely allies and advocates who rally fiercely by their sides.
At the center of the firestorm is state champ Mack, who wants nothing more than to wrestle against his fellow male opponents. But a discriminatory rule in Texas forces him to compete against young women, unleashing a cruel wave of taunts and fear-mongering from the local community and news outlets. The fight extends into New England with Sarah, a competitive skier, and Andraya, an African American track runner who — while technically allowed to compete with other women — faces a barrage of verbal abuse from the sidelines. Standing in their corner are supportive coaches, grandparents, educators, and classmates — many of whom represent a shifting mindset to the otherwise troubling and underreported arena of discrimination against trans youths.
