Trixie Mattel: Moving Parts

Directed by Nick Zeig-Owens2019USA91 mins

Both funny and illuminating, this behind-the-scenes exposé of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars winner and country music songstress, Trixie Mattel, offers a glimpse into the backstage drama of a drag superstar. Moving Parts follows Trixie (aka Brian Firkus) through the controversial third season of All Stars, her musical world tour, and the genesis of her popular Viceland series with partner in crime Katya Zamolodchikova. Director Nick Zeig-Owens showcases the glitz and glamour of being thrust into the public sphere as well as the frustrations and hardships of staying true to yourself when you have a legion of dedicated fans watching your every move.

Hilarious, bittersweet, and raw in equal measures, Moving Parts perfectly matches Trixie’s own persona, as she candidly discusses her family, her childhood in rural Wisconsin, and the price of fame — which at times includes the loss of professional and personal relationships. With cameos from the likes of Bob the Drag Queen, Jinkx Monsoon, and BenDeLaCreme, this delightful documentary portrait Ru-veals what lies beneath the wigs, makeup, and tiaras of one of America’s most beloved drag phenoms.
