We’re pleased to present a free program of shorts showcasing Taiwan’s next generation in film talent. Catch a brief document of Taipei Pride 2020; a coming-of-age tale about self-discovery, dating apps, and first crushes; a sweet portrait of modern millennial queer life; and a cruisy short set during martial law in 1979.
Since beginning to explore his sexuality and identity privately via the Internet and dating apps, thirteen-year-old Xiao-Wei has felt distanced from his straight friends, preferring the company of his online gay friends. In keeping the fact that he’s gay from his best friend Pin-Rui, Xiao-Wei doesn’t realize his closest friend has been carrying a secret of his own.
In 2020, the LGBTQ+ community in Taipei decided to host a pride parade during the COVID-19 pandemic, celebrating and marching for those who could not do it in their own countries.
On a winter evening in 1979, the arrest of anti-government protesters is underway. The city is under curfew, but a teenage student, out of curiosity, follows a mysterious young man from a riverside path into an abandoned hut. Living in Taiwan under martial law, are men constantly escaping from government, society, or the affection buried in their hearts?
A girl called Zhang Ya-Ting wants to change her name. A boy called Hong Jia-Hao wants to end his relationship with his sex buddy. The young generation cries out in frustration in this era when sexuality and self-identity have become uncategorizable.
