Joanna exists in a state of constant motion. Whether she’s simply fidgeting, riding her bike, or fumbling in her attempts to experiment sexually, she’s always on the move. In truth, she’s doing everything she can to outrun her own emotions and intense ADHD. The only time she’s at peace is in the water, swimming as if her life depends on it.
Just as Joanna’s luck would have it, trouble at home and with finances leave her without the prescription that makes her symptoms manageable at exactly the same time an intriguing new girl appears at school. Audrey is everything Joanna is not: grounded, confident, cool as a cucumber even in the sauna. Untethered and desperate, but undeniably drawn to Audrey, Joanna must find the strength to stop running and be still long enough to truly move forward.
Director Christoffer Sandler’s creative visual choices externalize his main character’s inner world, and newcomer Nikki Hanseblad embodies Joanna with charming intensity in this inviting, bittersweet coming-of-age film.
