The Venus Effect

Directed by Anna Emma Haudal2021Denmark105 mins

Twentysomething Liv has grown up on her family’s farm outside Copenhagen. It’s a pastoral life of routine and stability, and while Liv may be content, she’s also never been fully comfortable in her own skin. When slightly older and much wilder Andrea barrels into Liv’s greenhouse, late for a bachelorette party and wearing a handmade pussy dress, Liv is immediately drawn to her. While Liv’s is a world of garden beds in orderly rows, Andrea prefers camping on the overgrown edges of a neighboring orchard. She introduces Liv to her cosmopolitan girlfriends in the city, and quickly a friendship develops into something more.

As she reaches towards the warmth of new romance, Liv doesn’t realize that the once-solid ground has eroded away from her roots. Her family’s Christmas dinner looks quite different from their alfresco springtime lunch, and Liv herself has changed along with the seasons.

This lyrically lensed film compassionately portrays a young woman striving to redefine herself independent of the insulated life she’s begun to outgrow.
