A chance encounter at a lesbian bar brings two women of a certain age living strikingly different lives together in this winning romantic comedy. Named after Irene Cara’s classic anthem from Flashdance, What a Feeling blends heart with a lack of self-consciousness, telling a poignant story of new love amongst two women in the “sandwich generation” while also never taking itself too seriously.
“You can dance right through your life” is the mantra of free-spirited, unattached Fa (Proschat Madani, recently seen in Cuckoo). Something of a ladykiller, Fa runs her own carpentry business and cares for her aging Iranian mother who doesn’t know Fa’s a lesbian, much to the chagrin of everyone else around her. Marie Theres (Caroline Peters, Walk on Water) is a successful (but slightly uptight) doctor, living a high society life while raising a rebellious, judgmental daughter. When her husband of 20 years asks for a divorce out of the blue (and in front of all of her friends), Marie Theres looks to drown her sorrows at a lesbian bar on one fateful night. Like Irene Cara sang, “take your passion and make it happen.”
