At the peak of her musical career, Cantopop diva Denise Ho was performing in lavish costumes at packed stadium concerts. Her eccentric stage performances garnered audiences, but it was her brave personal lyrics that resonated with a city in turmoil.
That city is Hong Kong, a territory long embattled with China over democratic freedoms. With more citizens taking to the streets, the city took on a new form - as did Ho’s purpose as a public figure. The singer chose to come out as a lesbian, the first female pop star in Hong Kong to do so, when LGBTQ+ legislation was being debated among their government. And as protests intensified for independence from mainland China, Ho lent her status to the movement. In Sue Williams’ uplifting documentary the filmmaker chronicles Ho’s career from pop star to activist and the parallels to Hong Kong, a city in constant transformation.
