Free to Be… You and Me

Directed by Bill Davis, Len Steckler, & Fred Wolf1974USA48 mins

If you were a kid in the 1970s, chances are you danced around your bedroom singing your heart out to the infectious soundtrack Free to Be… You & Me. Maybe you still dance around your kitchen belting out the songs like “It’s All Right to Cry,” “Parents are People” and “William Wants a Doll” with your kids. If you haven’t had the magical experience of Free to Be… You & Me, don’t worry, it’s never too late.

Free to Be… You & Me was created by Marlo Thomas as a teaching tool for children, and quickly became the anthem of a generation. Based on her award-winning album of the same name, Free to Be explores the infinite possibilities of childhood. Filled with great songs and comedy bits from a galaxy of stars, the television special teaches gentle lessons about sharing, embracing individuality and celebrating diversity in others and was one of the first shows designed to combat rigid gender roles and stereotypes.

Top talent appears throughout the film, including guest stars Alan Alda, Mel Brooks, Harry Belafonte, Cicely Tyson, Carol Channing, Shirley Jones, Jack Cassidy and Kris Kristofferson.

Come celebrate its 35th anniversary with us. Here’s an opportunity to pass music and memories along to the children in your own life! — DARLENE WEIDE
